The Assemblist Letter 08 - A Season In Review

It's true what they say: time flies. As I sit down to put this letter together I can't believe just two months ago we opened the (first!) Brand Assembly Square. It seems like we've been doing this forever!

This season has been the most impactful for us, from growing Brand Assembly LA to our BASQ launch, each season we want to layer in something that will continue to interest our community and push our business forward. I wanted to take some time to share a few highlights for us from the past couple of months.

Lessons Learned from opening the Brand Assembly Square

Since opening the BASQ I wanted to share some insider advice on expanding your business. Start by doing your research in making sure that you have all the hidden costs laid out. Even though you think you have everything, things will always be more expensive then they really are. When we first started looking for the space, we really did a lot of analysis in terms of real-estate and where we could get the best bang for our buck, but we still wanted to make sure it was a convenient location for designers. It's a big commitment to open a physical space and it's important to make sure you can sustain it. 

Speaking about contemporary fashion

Our recent talk for FIT's Graduate Students really helped me grow in terms of speaking about our business. It was the biggest and most engaged audience we've ever had, which was a great opportunity for us. I think a lot of students there were a part of large companies - so the fact that we were talking to them about a contemporary business and fashion was very intriguing to them. After going through the process I'l probably continue touching on the business side of building a fashion brand. I think what was interesting for this group of students was learning primarily about the many components to our business and how we've executed everything. It's interesting to be a new business talking about managing new businesses ourselves. 

The Show Must Go On

The Brand Assembly LA trade-show is probably the most exciting and present aspect in our business in terms of where you can actually see growth. When we first started we had 21 brands participating and now we have 112! One thing we never want to lose is that the fact we are so involved in the trade-show. From the brands we pick to friendly check-in's during the show, it's important to stay involved in all aspects of your business or event. The little details make a difference.

Perfecting Personal Style

This goes back to my fall obsessions with sweaters, but generally I will always love wearing new emerging designers. My style really goes with the flow, I wear what I want as long as I'm comfortable. Luckily our designers make it easy to choose...
